英雄无敌3高清重制版正式发售

EvilP 更新于 2015-01-29 20:05

视频链接:youtubeyouku

H3HD今天终于是要正式上线了,其实我觉得要是单买PC可能去年七八月就上了……

大陆版购买地址(PC):http://shop.ubisoft.com.cn/p/brand-heroes-might-magic

Happy to hear you enjoyed the game ! Ubisoft says no, that the resource codes for the expansions are lost.
But it is not undoable to still make them, it just takes a lot more effort.
I`m hoping for a lot more new fans, and I think they might actually reconsider .

It is possible to buy this game with all expansions on GOG , though. Not HD, but definitely worth it.
I already own them, but will certainly buy them in HD, if they come

What was your main motivation for giving this legendary game a new lease of life 15 years after its first release?
Erwan le Breton (IP Director – Ubisoft EMEA)

With Heroes III HD Edition our main ambition was to finally answer the Heroes of Might & Magic series fans’ call. Over the years we have received thousands of messages from all around the world imploring for the return of Heroes of Might & Magic III. So we came up with this idea of preserving the essence of Heroes III while bringing the formula to a new level of polish. We have upgraded the graphics to 1080p HD to adapt the game to the current widescreen video standards. We have developed a 100% Steamworks PC version with a new online multiplayer lobby. And last but not least, we have brought this epic episode onto iOS and Android tablet so even on the move you don't have to stop playing.

The release of Heroes III HD Edition in 2015 has been motivated by the celebration of Heroes 20th Anniversary. To us it was the perfect occasion to fittingly celebrate this birthday and please all the Might & Magic fans with a remake that's been long awaited!

How long have you been working on this remake of Heroes of Might & Magic III?
Ray Tylak (Outsourcing Director - Ubisoft Chengdu)

The graphical redesign of this 1999 game was a real challenge. To achieve our objectives we worked on this critical aspect of an HD Remake with more than 30 artists fully committed to the job for a year. At the beginning of the project we planned it would take 30 days to recreate a single character and its animations. By improving the processes, task management and the overall workflow we managed to reduce the production time to 10 days per character.

Within this limited period of time constrained by production planning we re-worked more than 25 000 assets. To work efficiently on such a volume of assets we followed a strict 3-step process. Firstly we enlarged the original SD assets by 3. Then we remade and we detailed all the blurry pixelated areas or we recreated the whole asset when needed. Finally we polished the assets for a clean rendering in HD. During this process of upgrading the assets’ quality we faced another issue involving the User Interface. The original UI didn’t fit widescreen format and HD resolution, so we needed to recreate it from scratch in HD.

Thomas Ballitout (Lead Developer - DotEmu):

Months before the development could start we had to export all the graphic assets from the original game. By doing so Ubisoft could evaluate the quantity of work that would have to be done in order to develop this HD remake. By June 2013 we got our hands on the source code to run preliminary tests and make sure we could use this version to develop an HD remake.

In November 2013, we worked on adapting a Linux version to the latest PC and tablet OS's in the industry. First we checked the HD assets integration to make sure they fit the original game style. We soon figured out that we had to reduce the size of these assets to save memory and optimize RAM. On the basis of this first prototype we pursued the assets’ integration and we worked on other various aspects - we adapted the original 4:3 ratio to 16:9 display standards and we added an SD to HD switch feature to the PC version. From a production perspective we also developed new methods to improve our processes. We devised a tool to validate every single redesigned HD asset, and we developed a new system optimizing each asset's weight with the aim of optimizing the game memory.

From February 2013, the PC version rendering code has been reworked with the objective of porting it onto tablets. As a result we had unique code for the PC and tablet versions, greatly easing the development process. By the end of February a first playable tablet version was created, consisting of an SD game with basic touch controls.
In the meantime Ubisoft sent us uncompressed videos found in the 3DO archives. We replaced all the compressed Linux version’s cut scenes by clean re-encoded ones.

In April we received the last batch of HD assets from Ubisoft Chengdu and we completed finalizing their integration at the end of May. After an intense debugging phase we began work on the Steam features integration for the PC.
In June we launched a Beta to identify the latest issues, bugs and areas for improvement. During the last few months we have focused 100% on bug fixing and optimization.

In the end the development of Heroes of Might & Magic III – HD Edition took more than a year!

Can you tell us more about the studios in charge of the development of Heroes III HD?
 Cyrille Imbert (CEO - DotEmu)

For 7 years, DotEmu's mission has been to bring quality video games onto new devices including iPhone, Android, PC/Mac, and more recently, next-gen consoles. Today the company has a strong portfolio of prestigious clients like Ubisoft. With a steady knowledge in porting, emulation and platform adaptation, the company has successfully shipped prestigious remakes such as Final Fantasy VII, Metal Slug, and Street Fighter 2 onto many platforms.
With a team of talented and passionate people, DotEmu aims to bring the best games back to life, providing players with an enhanced experience. Working on the HD remake of Heroes III was an amazing opportunity we had to seize … especially because we are huge fans of this legendary opus.

Ray Tylak (Outsourcing Director - Ubisoft Chengdu)

Ubisoft Chengdu is a talented studio based in China employing around 200 people. Opened in 2008 the studio has developed a large range of expertise including AAA console games as well as online and mobile games. With a first experience on the Might & Magic franchise and a successful partnership on Might & Magic X – Legacy we have brought our expertise in arts and graphics to make this HD Edition come to life! We are very proud of the work that we have done and we hope to collaborate again with the Might & magic team in the near future!

Why did you choose to stick to the original game's visual identity?
Erwan le Breton (IP Director – Ubisoft EMEA)

Heroes of Might & Magic III is undoubtedly the fans’ most beloved episode in the series.

Our goal with this HD port was not to reinvent the wheel but to update the graphics to HD standards without altering the original game DNA or betraying New World Computing’s masterpiece. We put all our efforts in this project to preserve the game essence and stick to its original identity with the support of highly committed teams of graphic artists at Ubisoft Chengdu.

Updating the graphics was a work requiring a tremendous level of craftsmanship, precision and patience with more than 25 000 assets redesigned. 30 000 hours of work went into this graphical dimension of the project alone.

Ubisoft Chengdu based in China is used to this kind of meticulous work and thanks to the talent of its artists we've finally made Heroes III come back to life in HD.

What are the main features you have brought to the original game? What were your main challenges in terms of development?
Thomas Ballitout (Lead Developer - DotEmu):

Of course the main focus of the development of this remake was to upgrade the graphics from SD to HD with widescreen resolution compatibility. And to be crystal clear it was probably the most challenging and time demanding part of the job!

Adding support of HD assets on top of the old rendering was quite tricky as we had to preserve how the game used to work while being able to display the new assets in a brand new format. This resulted in many issues since the game relied on palette effects, an inadequate old-fashioned technology. To overcome this problem we had to re-implement most of the effects and find solutions to get the targeted visual result.

Beyond the graphical part we had to fully revamp the multiplayer game mode. In the original game the multiplayer was powered by DirectPlay which is no longer supported. Switching to Steamworks was not that easy and we had to find solutions to adapt the mode to new online standards.

On top of that we had to implement all the Steam features to the game PC version, resulting in a 100% Steamworks master. It was not the most complicated phase but it still required time and energy.

Finally regarding the tablet versions we had to implement touch screen controls. We developed several prototypes to determine the best configuration possible. We finally got satisfying results for all the gamers willing to play Heroes III on the go!

Ray Tylak (Outsourcing Director - Ubisoft Chengdu)

As the team dedicated to the graphics update of the original game, we committed to delivering the best HD version possible both on PC and tablets. Therefore all the issues we had to address were related to the graphics update.
Our biggest challenge was probably to move from SD to HD while preserving the game style and its original DNA. To do so we immersed ourselves for months in the Might & Magic universe doing our best to learn about its codes and its cosmogony, to remain faithful to the game's essence. We needed to redesign most of the assets to remove low-res textures, blurry areas and to develop highly detailed HD assets.

Beyond this, our team of artists had to deal with a huge volume of assets as we redesigned more than 25 000 creatures, castles, Heroes … To handle this impressive quantity of assets the studio asked the Data Management Team at Ubisoft to develop tracking and management tools improving asset sorting and storage.

Finally as a Chinese studio working in a globalized environment, another challenge was communication between teams. On Heroes III HD, three different studios based in different countries and different time-zones cooperate together in different languages. To improve the overall productivity of the project the three studios worked under a Jira environment. Jira is a project management tool which allowed strategic teams to attribute tasks, objectives and planning across teams. Thanks to it the communication was eased, the objectives were clear and we saved a lot of time and money.

What kind of challenges did you face bringing the game onto iOS and Android tablets?
Thomas Ballitout (Lead Developer - DotEmu):

We had to deal with a lot of challenges to make the tablet version come to life.

One of the first challenges was to adjust the mouse and keyboard controls so that the game could be perfectly playable using touch controls, especially during combat phases.

We were also limited by the amount of available memory on tablets with less than 1GB of RAM. We tried several techniques to better optimize memory usage by compressing the graphical textures and loading the minimum amount of data required by the game.

We also faced performance issues on Android mainly due to the great variety of devices using this OS. We had to use advanced graphical rendering techniques to improve performance, as well as reducing the size of HD textures on tablets having a low screen resolution.

Does Heroes III HD Edition include the first and second extension?
Erwan le Breton (IP Director – Ubisoft EMEA)

To understand the origin of the project and its fulfilment we need to go back in time to 2003. At that time we asked New World Computing to retrieve their archives for all the Might & Magic titles. We found huge amounts of data and tons of documentation but regarding Heroes III we had nothing but the usable source code of Heroes III Restoration of Erathia.

11 years later, to celebrate Heroes 20th Anniversary and answer fans’ call we made the decision to breathe new life into Heroes III. To truly preserve the game’s DNA we developed this remake on the basis of the original code from 1999 and we brought significant improvements to this version. In addition to refined graphics and resolution, we decided to add full Steamworks support (including online lobby) and to deliver both iOS and Android tablet versions! With this Heroes 3 HD Edition, players will live a fresh experience and, for the first time, will be able to play their favorite campaigns and hotseat maps on the go!

Will Heroes III HD offer a multiplayer experience?
Erwan le Breton (IP Director – Ubisoft EMEA)

In the PC version of the game you will be able to play skirmish maps with up to 8 players online. Thanks to the 100% Steamworks support we have implemented in this HD remake, we are very happy to introduce a new multiplayer lobby to Heroes III for easy and instant access to multiplayer battles.

By contrast, on the iOS and Android tablet versions there is no online multiplayer but we have kept the original hotseat mode to allow local play by simply passing the tablet from one player to another … and actually the tablet format perfectly fits the mode for exciting and fun moments of gameplay during endless trips or commutes!

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your career?

David Mullich – Director of Heroes of Might & Magic 3

I got my start in game development when personal computers first became available for the home. I was a computer science student at California State University, Northridge, where one of my professors offered me a job as a clerk in an computer store that he owned with several other instructors. It was while working in the store that I met the owner of Edu-Ware Services, a small educational and game software publisher. I wrote several games for Edu-Ware while I attended college, and then joined the company full-time as a designer-programmer after I graduated. The most popular game I made at Edu-Ware was The Prisoner, which was an adventure game based upon the British spy television series starring Patrick McGoohan.

When Edu-Ware was acquired by another company several years later, three of my co-workers and I formed our own game publisher, Electric Transit, which made 3-D simulations. We became Electronic Arts very first affiliated label publisher, but we weren't sufficiently capitalized to last more than a couple of years. I then joined The Walt Disney Company as its very first video game producer, and oversaw development of console and computer games based on DuckTales, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and other Disney properties. After four years of working for The Mouse, I decided to turn to the Dark Side by joining a small publisher called Cyberdreams, which made edgier games in collaboration with famous names from science fiction and fantasy. I worked with writer Harlan Ellison on the video game adaptation of his famous short story "I Have No Mouth, And I Must Scream" and artist H.R. Giger on a game called "Dark Seed," which was based on his artwork. I remained with Cyberdreams until its owner decided to focus on other businesses.

Can you tell us how you got involved with the Might & Magic saga?

After Cyberdreams closed down, I was contacted by Cyberdreams former technical director, John Krause. He told me that he was now working as a programmer at New World Computing, where they were looking for someone to manage the team developing the Heroes of Might & Magic series. I sent John my resume, and two weeks later I had a meeting with Mark Caldwell, New World's General Manger, and Jon Van Caneghem, the company's founder. I had actually met Jon a couple of years prior -- we were both on a game design panel at the annual Game Developers Conference. However, I didn't know I had officially gotten the job until after I had a two-hour telephone interview with Trip Hawkins, who was president of The 3DO Company, which owned New World. That telephone call was quite an experience, since Trip Hawkins was the most powerful person in the game industry at the time, having founded Electronic Arts and inventing game publishing as we know it today.

What are your best or worst memories of Heroes III dev.?

Almost all of my memories about developing Heroes III was good, but I have to say the best memory was the birth of my second son, Timothy, while we were developing the game. When I returned to the office after taking a week off for my son's birth, I found that the Heroes team had completely filled my office with balloons. Now, the only bad memory was due to a different kind of birth -- birthing the game. Developing a game is a very difficult thing to do, and as it's nearing completion, there's a lot of pressure to meet the delivery schedule required by the marketing, sales and manufacturing commitment dates. And since you want to make the best game possible, you wind up working very long hours to meet that date, and everyone is very tired. I usually wind up hating every game I've worked on by the time it's shipped, but I have to say that Heroes III was the exception; it's the only game that I still played after I had finished making it.

Do you have interesting facts to share about this development? (Insights or Easter Eggs)

As I'm sure most Heroes III fans know, several of the heroes in Heroes III are based on development team members. When I returned from paternity leave, I found that the team had taken an image of me used for a town elder in one of the Might & Magic RPG games and put me into Heroes III as Sir Mullich. They also put in my assistant director, Christian Vanover as the knight Christian. The barbarian "Crag Hack" is based on a character created by Jon Van Caneghem when he played Dungeons & Dragons. In the Armagaddon's Blade expansion, the elementalist Inteus is based on concept artist George Almond, and the ranger Gelu is based on animator Adam McCarthy.

If you had only one project to choose in your career, which one would it be?

There are many game that I'm proud to have developed or produced, but if I could only pick one to be remembered for, it would have to be Heroes III. Not only was it the most fun to make, but it still remains fondly remembered by the fans after all these years.

It has been already 20 years since the first Heroes of Might & Magic title, how will you celebrate this amazing anniversary?

Of course, I'll be downloading and playing the Heroes III HD edition when it comes out, and I've changed my Facebook profile picture to that of Sir Mullich.

What do you think about the impressive interest of the fans for the return of Heroes III in HD?

I am humbled by how loyal fans have remained to the game, and I am also very grateful that UbiSoft has paid attention to these fans. I've been very impressed with the upgrades I've seen to our original artwork, and I'm very eager to play the game.

What are you up to at the moment?

I spend a lot of my time lecturing and writing about game design. I now teach Game Production at The Los Angeles Film School. I also worked with the Boy Scouts of America on creating their new Game Design merit badge and run workshops several times a year teaching scouts how to design games. In addition, I give talks to educators and businessmen about how they can use game design principles to make what they do more fun and engaging to people. And, I continue to make games. Last year I produced two serious games about healthcare for the University of Santa Barbara and designed puzzle scenarios for a company planning to create a real-life Escape Room franchise.

What are you currently playing, and how do you like it?

Most of my game-playing time is spent playing the games that my students have created. Many of them are great fun and quite ingenious. The last "professional" game I played was Monument Valley, which also was great fun because I like puzzles and love optical illusion artwork, like the paintings of M.C. Escher. In fact, in an early Apple II role-playing game I designed, Empire II: Interstellar Sharks, I named a spacecraft engine that twisted space an "Escher Drive."

Any message for the fans? :)

I want to thank the fans for all their support, both when we were making the original Heroes games and now that Ubisoft has carried on the legacy. We make these games for you, and I am gratified that you enjoy them so much.
